Dr. Hellison will present a review of his work on physical activity-based urban youth program development over a 30 year period in comparison to recent research trends in: 1) the emerging field of youth development, 2) alternative research methods, 3) and funding and scholarly journals. Dr. Hellison is a professor at the Jane Addams College of Social Work and the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Director of the Urban Youth Leader Project. He earned a Ph.D. at Ohio State University in physical education, a master's degree in sociology from Kent State University, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Monmouth College, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He has received several prestigious awards from AAHPERD and other organizations and has published six books and numerous book chapters and articles. He is most well known for his work with underserved youth and for his personal-social responsibility program model, which has been adopted by many schools and community youth organizations in the United States, Canada, England, Spain, and New Zealand. |
