The Raymond A. Weiss Lecture: The Study of Muscle Soreness - From Microtears to Microarrays |
Priscilla M. Clarkson, Ph.D. is a Professor of Exercise Science and Associate Dean for the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She is a Fellow in the AAHPERD Research Consortium and in the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). She has served in many key leadership roles with ACSM, including President of the National ACSM and as a member of ACSM’s Board of Trustees.
Dr. Clarkson is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the University of Massachusetts Chancellor’s Medal, and has published over 100 scientific research articles. The major focus of her research is on exercise-induced muscle soreness and damage. She has also published in the area of Sport Nutrition and served for 8 years as the Editor for the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism.
Dr. Clarkson has also served on the Massachusetts Governor's Panel to improve police training practices to prevent cases of rhabdomyolysis (muscle damage) leading to kidney failure during training; on the Science Working Group at NASA to develop laboratories for Space Station; on the NCAA Competitive and Medical Safeguards Committee, and has served as a scientific advisor to the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. Dr. Clarkson currently serves on the Research Review Board of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute and is a scientific advisor to the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI). In addition, she is on the National Commission on Sports and Substance Abuse for the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. |
