Pedagogy Symposium - Methodological Approaches to Mining Sport Participants' Domain Specific Knowledge
Research designed to examine sport participants' domain specific knowledge may provide a critical link to help teachers and coaches facilitate learning. The purpose of this symposium is to explore methodological approaches to ascertain sport participants' domain specific knowledge in net/wall games (volleyball and tennis). Domain specific knowledge provides a useful theoretical framework to understand sport participants' knowledge at multiple points on the novice to expert continuum. This gives us information about what knowledge is held at each point and how knowledge structures are expanded and enriched as learning occurs. Multiple methodologies such as verbal responses (e.g., before, during, and after participation) and written responses at the same kinds of intervals have been used to explore domain specific knowledge in several sport activities. Data collection methods include audio-taped verbal responses before, during, and after game performance, written responses, and pre and post instruction interviews. One challenge researchers face when they examine domain specific knowledge is the development of a meaningful coding system for verbal and written responses. McPherson's (1993, 1994) verbal protocol analysis system for sport provides a valid and reliable coding system that can be modified under various conditions and in different contexts, depending on the specific purposes of the study. Thus the symposium is designed to provide researchers with a wider range of tools for collecting and analyzing verbal and written report data indicative of the internal knowledge representations help by sport participants.
