AAHE Plenary Session Follow-Up: The AsthmaBUS - An Innovative Outreach Asthma Screening and Education Program |
Asthma is a staggering problem in inner-cities. To increase awareness among Philadelphia middle-schoolers, we created a unique educational program:The AsthmaBUS. This consists of a large, red, double-decked, London Bus, staffed by a full-time educator, and equipped with a video-center and several educational activities centered around five cartoon characters: The AsthmaBUSters©, who serve as prompts for our educational themes: Asthma-Treat-It, Asthma-See-It and Asthma-Beat-It. The Bus also provides asthma screening and families’ notification. A set of educational materials (Asthma comic booklet, Animated Video, Trading Cards, Teachers’ and Students’ package) complement this program, which received the 2001 ACCP Presidential Award for Community Service. |
