At the Top in NCAA Division I Athletics: Perspectives of Female NCAA Division I Athletic Directors of Both Merged and Separate Programs |
As early as 1988, Acosta and Carpenter began identifying factors that were often perceived to be the cause(s) for the diminishing numbers of women leaders in intercollegiate sport. However, at the NCAA Division I level, where it remains unlikely to find a woman holding the top position, the perceived reasons for under-representation have not been specifically examined. Therefore, female NCAA Division I athletic directors of both merged and separate programs were questioned regarding their careers and perceptions as to why few women have been successful in attaining the position of athletic director at the NCAA Division I level. |
