Issues and Challenges in Constructing Standard-Based State Assessment Programs
Recent education reform has led to the establishment of national standards for all K-12 subject areas. Standard-based, high-stake state assessment programs have also been developed, but mainly for academic disciplines, such as math and reading. Since the publication of the NASPE's national physical education (PE) standard in 1995, there has been a growing interest/effort in developing standard-based state assessment programs to reestablish the accountability of school PE programs. After providing a brief review of education reform, accountability and assessment in PE, the program developers from South Carolina and New York State will introduce their state assessment programs and share their experiences.
