From Cooperation to Respect: Teaching Personal/Social Skills to Elementary Students (NASPE Content Standards 5 and 6) |
As with motor skills, there is a progression to teaching the personal/social skills. Proper personal/social characteristics and behaviors are necessary for promoting success in physical activity settings as well as in life. NASPE Content Standards 5 and 6 emphasize their importance. Presenters will overview the model used in the Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum (EPEC) to systematically teach elementary students eight different personal/social skills (e.g., best effort, cooperation, compassion, constructive competition, following directions, respect for others, responsibility, and self-control). Program objectives, including definitions, key behavioral indicators, and teaching/learning strategies for selected personal/social skills will be discussed and specific lessons demonstrated. |
