Basketball's First Great Coach |
“He was undoubtedly the greatest coach of his time,” said Nat Holman referring to hall of famer Prof Ernest Blood who coached the Passaic Wonder Teams to six undefeated seasons and a 188-1 record. Prof, who was known as the Grey Thatched Wizard, was a protégé of Dudley Allen Sargent and a disciple of Luther Halsey Gulick’s philosophy on sportsmanship. One of his Wonder Teams defeated an “unbeatable” Philadelphia high school all-star team 57-30. Prof registered three hundred career-coaching victories before Phog Allen, the Father of College Basketball Coaching started coaching. Prof’s coaching methods were a generation ahead of others. |
