Applying Behavior Principles to Changing Practitioners’ Behavior of Implementing Programs: Use of Computer Technology in Assisting Health Promotion Practitioners in Their Daily Practice
It is critical that not only health promotion materials but also the delivery of those by practitioners be based on behavior science. Unfortunately many practitioners lack extensive education/training in behavior science. There is a need for developing effective ways of assuring the premise. Utilizing behavioral principles to modifying practitioners’ behavior of delivering programs, a computer-based on-the-job practitioner-support system was developed that did not rely on conventional educational strategies such as workshops. We discuss how behavioral principles such as goal setting, stimulus control, and reinforcement, were incorporated, and present a case in providing a smoking cessation program in the workplace.
