Barriers to Leisure-time Physical Activity in the Hispanic Population
This presentation will attempt to analyze the obstacles to leisure-time physical inactivity among Hispanics and to make recommendations in order to minimize these barriers. Decreased levels of physical activity and exercise, together with poor diet is the second actual leading cause of death in the U.S. Physical activity has been associated with lower death rates for adults of any age and has been identified as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Hispanics in general tend to be more physically inactive when compared to White individuals. Strategies to enhance healthy behaviors in this community and other minority groups will be presented.
