Desperately Seeking Insulin - Diabetes, Nutrition, and Exercise Connections
Diabetes - its impact, prevention and management - will be explored through role play, labs, simple tools, and discussions. Participants: 1) don the roles of glucose, insulin, body cells and organs in the play, "Desperately Seeking Insulin," introducing basic concepts (glucose metabolism, types); 2) explore the affect of blood sugar on body cells in the hand's-on lab revealing the role of sugar concentrations on osmotic movement in causing diabetic symptoms; 3) make a simple tool to detect foot neuropathy and view the video, "An Ounce of Prevention;" 4) discover anthropological connections to differences in diabetes distribution among ethnic groups (diets, migration, lifestyle).
