Athletes with Eating Disorders: An Interdisciplinary Analysis |
Researchers have identified athletes as a high-risk group for developing eating disorders. Despite this knowledge, many athletic programs are not taking adequate steps to address this serious issue. In this session, the panelists will address a number of facets. A sports nutritionist will discuss the need to communicate with coaches regarding athletes who may have eating disorders and to develop multidisciplinary intervention strategies. Various social psychological factors must also be recognized and considered. Another relevant viewpoint is that of the influence of advertising in portraying the ideal image of the athlete. A final viewpoint will be liability concerns. |
