Myths and Realities of Exercise and Aging |
It is estimated that by 2025, there will be 60 million people over the age of 65, composing 20% of the total U.S. population. Statistics also indicate that those over 80 years of age compose the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. Regular physical activity has been shown to improve quality of life of older adults by maintaining independence, controlling diseases such as osteoporosis, heart disease and arthritis, and reducing stress and obesity. This symposium will describe the heterogeneity in physical function of older adults and discuss exercise programs for independent and frail older adults. |
