"Essence" Dance, A Simple Model for Improvisation |
This session, designed for physical educators and dance teachers, presents a tested model for improvisation that results in a group dance.
"Essence Dance" uses randomly selected word cards (verbs and adverbs) to build a dance. Each word suggests a movement or use of the body. Participants write their words on a chart mapping the phrases of music. We then analyze each word's movement "essence" in terms of these basics: body, space, time, and relationship. Then we improvise using creative problem-solving. Our product is a one-of-a-kind dance.
