Using Disability Sports in General Physical Education and the Transition Process
Secondary physical educators are faced with providing appropriate programming and addressing transition for students with disabilities (SWD). Over 90% of SWD receive physical education in the general setting by instructors not trained in adapted physical education--ideas for effective programming and transition must be shared. Since many secondary physical education curriculums are traditionally sports based, using skills and games from disability sports is a practical means of addressing appropriate programming. The purpose of this presentation is to share how implementing skills and games from disability sports can expand physical education programs and be a mechanism to address transition for SWD.
