New Perspectives on Folk Dance; the Ballet Folklorico of Bolivia. Lecture/participation.*
The session will highlight the new relevance of folk dance as a means to incorporate multiculturalism into the classroom. Using the Ballet Folklorico of Bolivia as a model, two-time Fulbright Scholar to Latin America, Elizabeth Rhodes, will provide a brief historical background of the Company and discuss its repertory as it reflects indigenous, Spanish, and African influences. Images, props, costumes, and music will bring to life the vibrant work of the world-acclaimed troupe. Audience members will also be invited to participate in learning the movements and rhythms of several specific dances which represent Bolivia’s diverse provinces.
