The Need for a Value-free View of Health |
Through a philosophical analysis and an historical over view, this presentation argues that health is an objective phenomenon. The authors of this paper offer an exposition that demonstrates how value-laden views of health, especially those that include notions of social and spiritual health, should play no role in health education. This paper argues that normativistic and value-laden views of health threaten the scientific foundation of health education and damage the profession’s credibility. Finally, the authors of this paper argue for a nonnormativistic view of health that is based on statistical normalcy and the natural functioning of the body and mind. |
