To the Pointe: Looking at Gender Issues Through Dance |
This paper/presentation will provide a pedagogical approach to looking at issues of gender through concert dance. Slides, video, and text, will establish a framework for questioning the dance and the gender constructs within it. Educators can use this paradigm to encourage students to question discriminatory perceptions of differences between men and women, look at the development of stereotypes, become aware of principles of objectification, and to view more critically the metaphor that dance can establish for the male/female body. Four topics: movement initiation, costuming, spatial design, and content will be discussed as a means for considering gender representation. |
