Authentic Teaching of Fitness Concepts to Children |
This session will provide elementary physical education teachers and teacher educators with information on how to teach aerobic and muscle fitness concepts without significantly reducing physical activity time during a lesson. The authentic learning ideas emphasize visual aids, objects, and demonstrations to increase children’s concrete understanding of fitness concepts. As an effective teaching strategy, this approach is supported by research which indicates that combined modes of learning increase understanding and recall more than verbal presentation alone. The fitness concepts in this presentation are consistent with current health-related fitness curricula and an important part of NASPE’s National Standards for Physical Education. |
