Winning Was Incidental
John Wooden was the Prof. Ernest Blood of his era. Blood, who first started playing basketball the year it was invented, became the game’s first great basketball coach. His Passaic HS “Wonder Teams” won 159 games straight. Blood had a farm system before Branch Ricky; he was a generation ahead of his time. Dudley Allen Sargent and Luther Halsey Gulick influenced Blood. Blood’s Passaic record (188-1) stands in contrast to his philosophy: “I train boys for the game of life, not to win basketball games.” Clashes with his principal/school board led to his departure. Blood is in the basketball hall of fame.
