Raymond A. Weiss Lecture: Research and Professional Practice: An Unrequited Love |
Stephen Silverman is Professor of Education and the Physical Education Program Coordinator at Teachers College, Columbia University. He received the Ed.D. degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1982. Dr. Silverman’s research focuses on teaching and learning in physical education and on the methods for conducting research in field settings. He has made well over 100 presentations and has published over 65 chapters and papers, including more than 40 refereed research articles in a variety of journals. He is the co-author of nine books related to teaching and research methods including Proposals that Work: A Guide to Planning Dissertations and Grant Proposals (4th ed., 2000, Sage), Student Learning in Physical Education: Applying Research to Enhance Instruction (1996, Human Kinetics) and Reading and Understanding Research (1998, Sage). Dr. Silverman has been a reviewer for numerous journals and served as Editor of the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education and the Research Works column of the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He has served as Editorial Board Chair for the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and currently is a member of several editorial boards. Dr. Silverman is a Past President of the AAHPERD Research Consortium, a past Chair of the AAHPERD Curriculum and Instruction Academy, and currently is Co-Chair of the Physical Activity and Physical Education Expert Panel of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Silverman is a Fellow in the AAHPERD Research Consortium and an Active Fellow in the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education in which he currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer. |
