Measurement: Digging the Gold (Knowledge) from the Data Mine |
People are now living a computerized daily life and the data relating to their activities are collected and stored automatically by banks, credit-cards companies, reservation systems, and electronic point-of-sale sites. As a result, data volumes grow rapidly and databases with millions of records and tens, or even hundreds, of fields have become common. Only 5-10% of the data, however, are usually analyzed and, as databases grow, traditional query languages become unfeasible to find patterns (knowledge). Fortunately, a new set of machine learning-based procedures, known as "data mining," has been developed recently to help us dig out meaningful patterns from large databases. The purpose of this symposium is to introduce the principles and practices of data mining techniques, including their statistical and mathematical foundations and related software. Other related issues, such as information privacy, will also be addressed. Finally, three application examples will be presented to illustrate how data mining techniques (using association rules, tree classifications, and artificial neural networks, respectively) can be applied to the data in our field. |
