Proposals must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. (PT) Saturday, July 15, 2006 You are invited to submit a research proposal for the 2007 American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention and Exposition to be held in partnership with Eastern District and Maryland AHPERD in Baltimore, Maryland, March 13-17, 2007.
In order to be considered, all abstracts must be submitted via the online system by 11:59 p.m. (PT) on Saturday, July 15, 2006. Due to the high volume of proposals submitted for review, abstracts submitted through electronic mail, U.S. mail or facsimile will not be considered.
PLEASE NOTE: The following sections include important information on submissions, peer review, deadlines, Graduate Student Award eligibility, audiovisual equipment and many other areas. Please review this information prior to submitting your abstract/symposium. After you have read this material, you will advance to the submission screens.PRESENTATION FORMATS: The Research Consortium considers abstracts and symposia describing completed, data-based research (including qualitative, historical and philosophical) that has not been presented or published elsewhere prior to the convention. Research that has not been completed and/or does not include specific results will not be considered for presentation at the convention. Such work should not be submitted for review. The Consortium offers the following three presentation formats: When you submit your abstract you will select your preferred presentation format. Free communication and poster abstracts may be accepted in a format different from your requested preference. Accepted abstracts will be published in the 2007 Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport (RQES) Supplement. To assist you in the preparation of your Free Communication, Poster, or Symposium submission, please review published examples in previous years RQES Supplement (March issue). LIMITATION ON NUMBER OF PRESENTATIONS: Individuals may be a presenter at no more than two (2) total sessions during the 2007 AAHPERD National Convention, inclusive of the Research Consortium. Poster presentations and Symposium are included in this requirement. However, you may be a non-presenting co-author on as many abstracts as you desire.DUAL SUBMISSIONS NOT ALLOWED: Individuals may not submit the same abstract or program to two different components of AAHPERD, including the Research Consortium. This practice violates submission protocol ethics and papers will be rejected outright if submitted to two places simultaneously. SELECTION CRITERIA: Proposals received by the deadline will be forwarded to one of 13 review panels for review. Free Communication and Poster submissions will be evaluated on the following criteria: Symposia will be evaluated on the following criteria: (See section below on Graduate Student Award for criteria used to evaluate abstracts being considered for this award) IRB APPROVAL AND INFORMED CONSENT: In order to be considered for inclusion in the Research Consortium’s Convention programming, research studies must have been approved by the relevant Institutional Review Board(s) (IRB), as required by the Code of Federal Regulations. Research studies involving human subjects are also required to include informed consent. You will be asked to verify on the submission screen that IRB approval has been obtained (or certify that the research is conceptual in nature or otherwise excluded from requiring IRB approval.) You will also be asked to verify that informed consent has been obtained from all human subjects (or certify that the research did not involve human subjects or was otherwise excluded from federal and state informed consent laws and regulations.) Only those research abstracts stated to be in compliance with Title 45 Part 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations/Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects will be eligible for presentation at the conference. NOTIFICATION OF REVIEW DECISION: First authors of free communications or poster submissions and organizers of symposia will be notified of the review disposition by September 30, 2006. Since notification will be handled via email to the first author, if your email address changes between the date of your submission and September 30, 2006, please let the Research Consortium know by emailing research@aahperd.org. First authors and symposia planners are responsible for notifying co-authors of the disposition of the submission. ABSTRACT PUBLICATION: Accepted abstracts and symposia will be published in a special pre-convention Supplement to Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. All first authors’ emails will be published with the abstract/symposia in the Supplement. Research accepted for presentation at the National Convention must not have been presented or published elsewhere prior to the 2007 Convention. Authors of accepted abstracts/symposia may be interested in making their research available to Conference Papers Online (CPO), a library database of information dedicated to conferences, seminars and workshops. If you wish to provide CPO with your abstract and/or your handouts, PowerPoint slides, or other materials related to your presentation, please contact the organization directly at dion@conferencepapersonline.com. PROGRAM SCHEDULING: Sessions are scheduled throughout the Convention from 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13 through 2:15 p.m. Saturday, March 17. Tuesday programming is considered part of the full convention, rather than a pre-convention day, so sessions will be scheduled on that day as they are throughout the entire convention. Please do not submit an abstract or symposium unless you are prepared and available to present your research during any of these convention days. By submitting this abstract/symposium you are making a professional commitment to attend the Convention and present your research if accepted. A penalty will be assessed for withdrawals or cancellations on or after December 1, that are deemed to be without good cause. Any cancellation before or after December 1, 2006 about which the Research Consortium Director is not notified will result in a 3-year period during which you and your coauthors will be prohibited from presenting research in any format on the Research Consortium program at AAHPERD National Conventions. Your eligibility to present on the Research Consortium program would not be restored until the 2011 AAHPERD National Convention. EXPENSES: Presenters who are involved in the fields of health, physical education, recreation and dance education must register to attend the convention. In addition, all related travel and hotel accommodations are the presenters’ responsibility. Please explain this policy to all individuals who participate in your program. Presenting at AAHPERD’s annual convention provides you with national recognition at a major convention and the opportunity to share your research with peers and colleagues. Presenters NOT in the fields of HPERD will be given (upon request) a one-day free registration for the day of their presentation. See section below on expenses related to the recipient of the Research Consortium’s Graduate Student Award. AUDIOVISUALS: DEADLINES: RESEARCH CONSORTIUM GRADUATE STUDENT AWARD: To have a free communication or poster abstract considered for the Research Consortium Graduate Student Award, the first author must be a graduate student (or must have been a graduate student at the time the research was completed) and must be the primary presenter at the Convention. An abstract will be considered for this award only if the submitter clicks on the box indicating "Yes, please consider this abstract for the Graduate Student Award. I am/was a graduate student at the time this research was completed." All formatting requirements described in this "Call for Proposals of Research Symposia and Abstracts" also apply to abstracts competing for the Graduate Student Award. Note that symposium subabstracts are not eligible to compete for this award since only the overall symposium is rated, rather than the individual subabstracts. Only the top-rated abstracts accepted by the Research Consortium for presentation at the 2007 National Convention will be eligible for further consideration by the Consortium’s Committee on Awards. The Research Consortium will notify these contenders by email in October 2006 and request an extended abstract for review by the Research Consortium Committee on Awards. Formatting specifications for the extended abstracts will be provided at that time. The Committee on Awards will consider extended abstracts on the following criteria: 1) Significance of the study; 2) Design and methods; 3) Data analysis; 4) Results 5) Discussion and 6) Writing Clarity. Top-rated contenders will also be asked to have their Graduate Student Advisors submit an email statement of recommendation for the award. (All abstracts and advisor letters will be blinded before being reviewed by the Research Consortium Committee on Awards.) The winner of the award must attend the 2007 Convention to be recognized at the C.H. McCloy Breakfast, to be held on Thursday, March 15, 2007. The Research Consortium will cover registration fees for the 2007 AAHPERD Convention and the McCloy breakfast for the winner of this award..
