The roles of health educators constantly are being revised. The Health Education Job Analysis (HEJA) 2010 competencies represent the latest version of performance expectations. To be successful, health educators must ensure their professional activities align with current guidelines, which might require modifications to daily practices. This ability to modify and adjust to challenges and changes in one's environment can be defined as resilience (Henderson, 2004). Resilience is fostered by a number of environmental conditions and interpersonal relations that have been identified as protective factors. Six of these protective factors appear consistently in the literature: Purpose & expectations (PE), nurture & support (NS), positive connections (PC), meaningful participation (MP), life guiding skills (LGS), and clear & consistent boundaries (Henderson, 2003). In this interactive session, participants will draw connections between these six protective factors and the competencies outlined in the 2010 HEJA. By the end of the session, participants will identify the six protective factors, and map these protective factors onto the HEJA competencies where appropriate.
