Photo-elicitation: An Innovative Qualitative Technique in Health Promotion

Using photo-elicitation and in-depth interviews, this qualitative study used stratified purposive sampling to examine how marriage influences spousal physical activity behavior using General Systems Theory. Results of this study indicate that photo-elicitation is an innovative research technique yielding richer qualitative data than interviews alone.

This presentation will outline the results of the study, as well as discuss best practices for using photo-elicitation. At the conclusion of this Category II presentation, participants will have the ability to:

1)Differentiate between Wang's photo-voice technique and Collier's photo-elicitation technique 2)Understand best practices for using photo-elicitation in qualitive studies 3)Describe logistical and ethical issues related to photo-elicitation 4)Identify appropriate contexts for the use of photo-elicitation
