SUBMISSION DEADLINE: June 15, 2011
You are invited to submit a research proposal for the Research Consortium Conference of the 2012 American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention and Exposition. In order to be considered, all abstracts must be submitted via the online system by 11:59 p.m. (PDT) on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. Abstracts submitted through electronic mail, U.S. mail or facsimile will not be considered. Requests for late submission will not be accepted and incomplete submissions will not be reviewed.

PRESENTATION FORMATS:
The Consortium offers the following presentation formats for abstract submission:
- Oral - This format involves a 12-minute verbal presentation with a 3-minute question and answer period.
- Posters - This format involves presentation of research project/findings on a 4’x 8' poster board and discussion with attendees during a 90-minute session.
When submitting the abstract, select the preferred presentation format. Abstracts may be accepted in a format different from the requested preference.
- Symposia - This format involves verbal presentation of a series of related research abstracts by several researchers. Generally, there are 3-5 researchers who present their related works during a symposium, which can range in length from 1 to 2 hours. Symposia submissions should be complete (i.e. - include multiple abstracts on a related topic). If you have only one paper/study to submit, it should be submitted as an abstract.
Abstract submissions must describe original, data-based research (quantitative, qualitative, historical, or philosophical) that has been completed at the time of submission and with specific results reported. The paper must not be accepted for publication (or already published) at the time the abstract is submitted and it must not be presented elsewhere prior to the AAHPERD Convention.
- Tutorials - This format involves research education on a given topic for the purpose of developing knowledge and skills primarily related to the teaching, conduct, or administration of research-related activities. The information is for the purpose of providing professional development (rather than the sharing of related research studies/data as with symposia). Generally there are 2-4 researchers who present their related topic during a tutorial, which can range in length from 1 to 2 hours. As with symposia, each speaker should include an individual abstract on their subtopic in the submission.
LIMITS ON NUMBER OF SUBMISSIONS:
Individuals may be a presenter on no more than two (2) total sessions/abstracts across the AAHPERD convention program. Oral presentations, poster presentations, Symposia and Tutorials are all included in this requirement. However, there is no limit on the total number of authored/co-authored submissions.
RESEARCH CONSORTIUM SELECTION CRITERIA:
Abstracts for Oral or Poster presentations will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Significance: Appropriateness, significance and clarity of the statement of the problem.
- Design: Methods, techniques, procedures, and mode of analysis.
- Results: Summary of findings (results, conclusions, and discussion). It is not satisfactory to only state that "The results will be discussed."
Symposia will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Significance: Importance of the topic.
- Conceptual and Research Basis: Theoretical background and current research on the topic.
- Thoroughness: Thorough analysis of important aspects of topic.
- Clarity: Proposal well organized and adequately detailed.
Tutorials will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Significance: Importance of the topic.
- Relevance: to AAHPERD audience.
- Thoroughness: Thorough analysis of important aspects of the topic.
- Clarity: Proposal well organized, adequately detailed, clear educational purpose.
FRAGMENTATION OF RESEARCH:
Authors are reminded that fragmentation of research is discouraged. Fragmentation is the dividing of a research study into smaller reports to increase the number of presentations/publications. Research findings from one study that are submitted as multiple abstracts may be rejected for fragmentation of findings. IRB APPROVAL/EXEMPTION:
To be considered for inclusion in the Research Consortium’s Convention programming, research studies, as identified by Title 45 Part 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations/Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects or the equivalent (e.g., Nuremburg Code, Helsinki Declaration), must have been approved/exempted by the relevant Institutional Review Board(s) or the equivalent governing body of a foreign institution. Only those research abstracts stated to be in compliance will be eligible for presentation at the conference.

ABSTRACT PUBLICATION:
Accepted abstracts, symposia and tutorials will be published in a 2012 Supplement to Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. All first authors’ emails will be published with the abstract/symposia/tutorial in the Supplement.
GENERAL 2012 PROPOSAL INFORMATION:
Please refer to the main 2012 AAHPERD convention submission page for important information relevant to presenting, including limitations on number of presentations, dual submissions, program scheduling, expenses, summary of guidelines for submitting a proposal and notification of review decision. Note that for the RC, first authors of abstracts submitted with requests for oral or poster presentation formats and planners of tutorials and symposia will be sent detailed notifications of the review disposition by September 30, 2011. Since this notification will be handled via email to the first author of abstracts or the symposium/tutorial planner, if your email address changes between the date of your submission and September 30, 2011, please let the Research Consortium know by emailing research@aahperd.org. Co-authors of accepted abstracts will also be sent a general notification message.
WITHDRAWALS AND CANCELLATIONS:
In addition to the scheduling information presented on the AAHPERD 2012 convention submission main page, note that a penalty will be assessed for withdrawals or cancellations on or after December 1, that are deemed to be without good cause. Any cancellation before or after December 1, 2011 about which the Research Consortium Director is not notified will be subject to review by the Research Consortium Ethics Committee and may result in a 1- to 2-year period during which you and your coauthors will be prohibited from presenting research in any format on the Research Consortium program at AAHPERD National Conventions. Submitters are referred to the Research Consortium Code of Ethics (www.aahperd.org/rc, under "About"), which provides more information on the expected conduct of researchers participating in Research Consortium activities.
AUDIOVISUAL EQUIPMENT FOR RC SESSIONS:
Each lecture session will have an LCD projector available in the room. All presenters using the LCD will need to bring their own laptop already loaded with their PowerPoint presentations or make arrangements to share a laptop with other presenters in their session.
Lecture rooms will also include a head table, a podium, a podium microphone, a clip-on lavaliere microphone, and a projection screen. No Internet access, wireless microphones or laser pointers will be provided. See the main submission page for additional information on audiovisuals.
RESEARCH CONSORTIUM GRADUATE STUDENT AWARD:
To have an abstract considered for the Research Consortium Graduate Student Award, the first/primary author must be enrolled in or no longer than one calendar year past graduation from the graduate degree program in which the study was conducted and must be the primary presenter at the Convention. An abstract will be considered for this award only if the submitter clicks on the box indicating "Yes, please consider this abstract for the Graduate Student Award. I am/was a graduate student at the time this research was completed, am the primary author and will personally present the research." All formatting requirements described in this call for proposals apply to abstracts competing for the Graduate Student Award. Note that tutorials and symposia (including subabstracts) are not eligible.
RESEARCH CONSORTIUM UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT AWARD:
To have an abstract considered for the Research Consortium Undergraduate Student Award, the first/primary author must be enrolled in or no longer than one calendar year past graduation from the undergraduate degree program in which the study was conducted and must be the primary presenter at the Convention. An abstract will be considered for this award only if the submitter clicks on the box indicating "Yes, please consider this abstract for the Undergraduate Student Award. I am/was an undergraduate student at the time this research was completed, am the primary author and will personally present the research." All formatting requirements described in this call for proposals apply to abstracts competing for the Undergraduate Student Award. Note that tutorials and symposia (including subabstracts) are not eligible.
SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA:
For both the Undergraduate and Graduate Award Categories, only top-rated abstracts accepted by the Research Consortium for presentation at the 2012 National Convention will be eligible for further consideration by the Consortium’s Awards Committee. The Research Consortium will notify these contenders by email in October 2011 and request an extended abstract for review by the committee. Specifications for the extended abstracts will be provided at that time. Top-rated contenders will also be asked to have their advisor submit an email statement of recommendation for the award. (All abstracts and advisor letters will be blinded before being reviewed by the committee.) The Awards Committee will consider extended abstracts on the following criteria: 1) significance of the topic; 2) design and methods; 3) data analysis; 4) results; 5) discussion; 6) writing clarity; and 7) strength of advisor’s letter.
