How can we structure program climates to develop youth leaders? In this 20th anniversary lecture, research examining the role that sport and physical education play in developing youth leadership will be reviewed and critiqued for the purpose of drawing implications to guide professional practice. Emphasis will be placed on the need for physical educators and coaches to be much more intentional in structuring climates conducive to developing leadership and implementing specific strategies designed to accomplish this objective. In his lecture, Daniel Gould, Director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, will place particular emphasis on empowering young people to lead.
