421 Moving Coal & Moving Green—Dance All Around Us

Thursday, March 31, 2011: 2:15 PM-4:15 PM
Convention Center: Ballroom 20A
Presiders: Peter Werner, University of South Carolina Columbia (retired), Black Mountain, NC; Terry L. Sweeting, California State University, Northridge, Northridge, CA; and Vicki Millar, Diablo Valley College, Livermore, CA
Through the expressive nature of dance, students can appreciate our environment on both a personal and global scale. In part 1, compare the Japanese coal mining dance “Tanko Bushi” with coal mining in America. In Part 2, examine "green" recycling concepts. In both sessions there is emphasis on the teacher-student decision making process, plus dance composition. The book “Implementing the National Dance Education Standards” and additional research act as models for lesson plans and assessment.
