Since the implementation of Title IX, female participation in sport has grown exponentially. In 2010, there were 9,087 women’s intercollegiate teams. Despite continuing opportunities in participation for women, the number of female coaches has simultaneously decreased. Less than 50% of women’s teams are coached by women. The presenters will explore possible explanations for this phenomenon, including issues related to socialization and encouragement to enter other professions, and reasons for attrition among female coaches.
