College is a time when female student-athletes are in transition in their athletic, academic and personal lives. As a result, mentoring relationships may be increasingly relevant to female student-athletes. Many females, however, encounter challenges in finding a mentor and may desire different mentoring functions than male student-athletes. This study examines how mentoring sources and functional preferences may be different for female student-athletes compared to male student-athletes using Kram’s (1985) mentor role theory.
