17th Annual Raymond A. Weiss Lecture: Translational Science - A Roadmap to Healthy Activity for All |
Translational science is the new buzzword in research funding circles. For AAHPERD scholars this should be a joyful sound because application based on basic science and theory has always been the combination the organization and its members have espoused. Funding agencies would like to see more integrated efforts among basic and applied scientists leading to greater clinical impact. In this lecture, Dr. Beverly Ulrich, dean of the division of kinesiology at the University of Michigan, will focus on this as a realistic approach for our field and will illustrate with examples from her line of research. For nearly 20 years she has taken a two-pronged approach, starting with questions that relate to underlying principles of change in motor behavior followed by application of the knowledge gained to populations with motor delays: persons with Down syndrome and infants born with Spina bifida. This work has led to basic science discoveries and therapeutic interventions that aid walking onset. Walking increases physical activity and, thus health. Overall, this presentation will serve as one example to reinforce the need of AAHPERD scholars to embrace translational science. By doing so, a clearer roadmap to healthy activity for all can be established. |
