29th Annual C.H. McCloy Research Lecture and Breakfast: Social Psychology and Physical Activity - Back to the Future |
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, speaker Diane Gill’s academic career and the sub-discipline of sport and exercise psychology began as “social psychology and physical activity.” Since then, the academic focus has shifted away from the social to a more bio-psycho-(no social) approach, and professional attention has focused on elite athletes and exercisers. In this talk, Dr. Gill, professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will discuss how sport and exercise psychology can contribute to an integrative and relevant professional discipline of kinesiology by going back to the future as social psychology and physical activity. She asserts that first we must focus our scholarship on an encompassing psychology of physical activity rather than divisive, separate sport psychology and exercise psychology. Second, our psychology of physical activity must be practical, and maintain connections with professional practice in kinesiology. Most of all, we must emphasize the social to truly understand the complexities of physical activity behavior, and ensure that professional kinesiology is inclusive and relevant. Social psychology and physical activity can be part of a larger integrative professional discipline of kinesiology that serves the public by promoting health and well-being for all through physical activity. Dr. Gill is a Fellow and past president of the AAHPERD Research Consortium. Her research interests focus on physical activity and well-being across the lifespan, with an emphasis on social psychology, particularly gender and cultural diversity. |
