CANCELLED: Beyond X's and O's: Coaching as Social Justice Work |
The relationship that exists between an athlete and her coach is instrumental (Murray & Mann, 2000). While the case has been made that an athletic coach has the ability to serve as a mentor and role model to an impressionable young athlete (Lough, 2001), there are few coaching education programs that focus on coaching as a platform from which to educate students on the value of social justice. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate concrete ways in which coaches can be advocates for civic engagement and for the creation of more socially just sport environments. |
Speakers: Elizabeth A. Slator, Rice University, Houston, TX; and Kerrie J. Kauer, California State University-Long Beach, Long Beach, CA |
