Hooking Students into Grief, Loss and Transformations Using Film
First and second year college students often link loss and death with loss of relationships, death of grandparents, or accidents and suicides of friends. This program explores the use of film, teaching methods and theory appropriate to helping students relating loss to transformations. Issues in the thanatology field such as reactions to loss and change, taking care of unfinished business, and disenfranchised grief are related to growth and transformations. Pedagogical issues include balancing task and process teaching, using student assistants from previous classes, exploring student leadership styles, strategies for building community and working with introverts and extraverts.
