From Native American Stickball to Modern Lacrosse and Ice Hockey
The sports of lacrosse and ice hockey have deep roots in North America. When Europeans arrived in the New World, they observed Native Americans engaging in various types of stick and ball play. In historical documents, there are details on the playing area, equipment, players, game length, game rules, and reasons for playing. While writings provide some insight into stickball play, they often fail to fully depict the nature of the competition. This presentation will illustrate the beginnings of lacrosse and ice hockey via glimpses of various drawings and paintings by early American artists.
