Don Imus...Were His Comments Racist or Sexist?
Former radio “Shock Jock” Don Imus started a fire storm with his comments regarding female athletes following the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships. Not until the Rutger’s Women’s Basketball team attended a press conference were these remarks reported as sexist. Were the comments made by Imus racist or sexist? Are these comments a result of the perceptions of women in sport within our society or just the mindless banter of a radio shock jock? This presentation will discuss the results of research examining college students’ perceptions of women in sport, Mr. Imus’ comments and subsequent media attention.
