The Obesity Epidemic and Physical Activity: Developing Intrinsic Motivation |
Physical activity plays a central role in weight management. Despite an expanding awareness of the importance of an active lifestyle, a majority of the population does not achieve recommended activity amounts. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight some of the societal challenges in activity promotion, identify principles from established theories of motivation and behavior change that can be used to enhance the quality of physical activity experiences, and describe cognitive-behavioral strategies for raising intrinsic motivation. The strategies discussed are applicable across a variety of settings and ages. However a specific emphasis will be placed on pediatric obesity. |
