Symposium: The Dilemma of the Disability Label
The purpose of this symposium is to consider the construction of difference as a cultural predisposition toward certain actions that create culturally defined expectations of normalcy. A secondary purpose is to raise epistemological questions that address fundamental issues of voice, power relations, and the actions that emanate from dominant ideologies. We present research that calls into question the communal construction of knowledge and the constraints that challenge our understanding of disability by considering the social, cultural, and environmental conditions that affect the educational interests of individuals with disabilities.
