Exploring the Physics of Dance through Creative Improvisation
Dance students are rarely exposed to the laws of physics that govern the movement they are asked to perform. However, even young children understand concepts like Newton’s Laws and mathematical equations when they encounter them as creative explorations. Here we examine the physics of movement - gravity, force, acceleration, friction and torque - through relaxed improvisation. This learning helps create proper kinesthetic memories, which then frees the dancer to explore artistic elements. Participants discuss how the material relates to different dance styles and how to incorporate these studies into classes of all ages and abilities. The National Dance Standards are utilized.
