Youth Sport Specialization: Single Sport or Multiple?
Although there is plenty of anecdotal evidence of the trend toward earlier specialization in sport – what do educators, coaches, and athletics directors really know about specialization? The increase in specialized athletes has generated both attention and controversy at the youth and high school levels. The latest research on sport specialization will be reviewed. The session will also highlight the advantages and disadvantages of specialization, contributing factors, and the effects of specialization. Relevant statistics from the National Federation of High School Sports and the NCAA will also be presented. Attendees will learn practical strategies for use in their own sport settings.
