The Other Learning Area in Schools - Outdoor Play Environments
Traditionally, the outdoor school environment has been ignored in the planning and design of schools. In fact, many times it is left to PTA/PTOs to fund playground equipment and other amenities. However, considering that children spend at least an hour a day (recess/lunchtime)in the outdoor environment, it seems that it would be important to plan this area in a way that it contributes to the overall education of children. This session will address how to plan to incorporate the outdoor environment into the overall curriculum of the school.
