The Good, Bad and Ugly: Media Images of Physical Educators |
Physical educators can create positive or negative images of themselves based on their levels of professionalism and conduct. However, images of physical educators (and physical education) in the media can also influence how the general public views the profession. This session will examine images of physical educators by looking at how stereotypical images are created and presented in the media. Images (the good, bad and ugly) of physical educators will be presented via media illustrations, “real life” examples, and skits, with a focus on evaluating characterizations according to NASPE standards. Audience members will be provided strategies for promoting positive images. |
Speakers: Derrick G. Mears and LeaAnn Tyson Martin, Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA; and Grace Goc Karp, University of Idaho, Moscow, ID |
