EDA Margaret Paulding Lecture: Title IX: The Law and Beyond |
The Margaret Paulding Lecture series is a joint project of the former Eastern Association for Physical Education for College Women (EAPECW) and the Eastern District Association. Each year a scholar lecturer is chosen to honor a woman in higher education. The purpose of the lecture series is to honor women’s past, present, and future contributions to the various disciplines and to respect the traditions and the intention of the EAPECW. This years honoree is Betty Mann.
With respect and admiration for the contributions of Margret Paulding, it seems fitting to think about the impact of Title IX, 35 years later. We have witnessed through recent cases and interpretations and applications of the law (Roderick v. Birmingham Board of Education (2005), Gebser v Lago Vista Independent School District (1998), and decisions at James Madison University) both reasons to celebrate and continued cause for concern. While we applaud the remarkable advances and progress, critical areas remain off-pace. A discussion about where we are and what lies ahead will include for example, issues of access, socioeconomic class, and participation of minority female athletes. |
