Musical Training for Dance Educators
This session explores key elements of music that constitute an essential component of the knowledge base for dance educators. The workshop will highlight aspects of music/rhythm theory and motor control/learning theory pertinent to learning and teaching dance. Practical activities will focus on perceptual (auditory acuity) and motor (kinaesthetic acuity) rhythmic abilities; metric and non-metric rhythm; synchronisation of movement to music; rhythmic elements that characterize specific dance skills; modified music analysis; and basic rules of accompaniment with percussion. The workshop content will be linked to performing, making, and appreciating dance, and to National Dance Content Standards 1, 2, 4, and 7.
