Trend Analyses of the Adapted Physical Education Employment Market at Colleges and Universities

Jiabei Zhang, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI

It is believed that systematic data-based investigations focusing on trend analyses of the adapted physical education (APE) employment market are prerequisite for developing a program for APE trainees. The purpose of this study was to analyze employment market trends in APE at college and universities. All position openings posted in The Chronicle of Higher Education were searched. In this data source, a total of 814 position openings requiring APE as a part of duty were identified from academic years 1975-76 and 2005-06. Three data sets were used: (a) APE job openings, (b) APE first priority, and (c) APE second priority. APE job openings included the yearly frequencies of openings requiring APE as a part of duty. APE first priority was the yearly frequencies of position openings requiring teaching APE as a major duty. APE second priority was the yearly frequencies of position openings requiring teaching APE as a minor duty. All data sets were fitted in linear regression equations. Each of these equations was calculated with academic years as the predictor variable and the yearly frequencies as the criterion variable. Its effect of the predictor variable on the criterion variable was checked in an analysis of variance (F test) and a coefficient of determination (R2). Results indicated that the fitted equation for APE job openings was Y = 0.6802X - 1327.40, R2 = .55, F(1, 29) = 35.31, and p = .00. It indicates a significantly accelerating trend, increased by 0.68 APE position openings per year since 1975-76. This significantly accelerating trend is contributed primarily by APE second priority data, not by APE first priority data, since a significantly increasing trend can be graphed based on the fitted equation using APE second priority data, Y = 0.6984X – 1375.70, R2 = .71, F(1, 29) = 71.55, and p = .00, while no trend can be described based on the fitted equation with APE first priority data, Y = 48.30 - 0.0181X, R2 = .01, F(1, 29) = .04, and p = .84. These results support that APE career in higher education is a growing employment market that is primarily contributed by position openings in which teaching APE is required as a secondary area.
