Commercial Presentation: Gopher Sport: Creating a Wellness Policy: Active and Healthy Schools |
With passage of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, the U.S. Congress established a new requirement that all school districts with a federally-funded school meals program develop and implement wellness policies that address nutrition and physical activity by the start of the 2006-2007 school year. This presentation will focus on how to change the school environment to improve activity levels and eating habits of students. The Gopher Active and Health School program is an evidence-based program designed to help school personnel implement a program that improves student wellness. Active and Healthy schools focus on how to develop a program that increases physical activity and improves eating habits of students. In addition, a sun safety program is included to assure a healthy environment for outdoor activities. Changing the school environment involves playground, after school, lunch hour, and the recess personnel. Attendees will learn about an evidence-based instructional approach that expands the role of the physical educator into an active and health school coordinator. Handouts that describe and outline the program Active and Healthy School program will be shared with participants. |
