Achieving Standards 3, 5, and 6: Integrating the Socio-cultural Area into Elementary Physical Education |
Many undergraduate teacher preparation programs require their students to take courses in the history, sociology, and philosophy of sport and physical education, though sometimes these classes are a combination of two of the subject areas. Often students will wonder how they will use the materials from these courses in their teaching activities. Moreover, depending on the instructor, there may be little direct tie-in into a physical education curriculum. The “Concepts” textbook and the NASPE standards, as well as several state physical education frameworks, address each subject area in their guidelines for physical educators. As such, it is imperative that instructors help the student make direct connections between the subject area and how it might be used to help meet national standards. This session is designed for elementary school physical educators and will introduce various activities that utilize the “Concepts” textbook, as well as the NASPE standards, and how these can be met in an elementary physical education curriculum. |
