What Were You Doing When Your Themes Emerged? Research Design Issues Related to Qualitative Methods |
Questions of quality in qualitative research are inherently tied to the numerous design issues that surround the qualitative research process. When studies are inadequately conceived, qualitative researchers often find themselves faced with the rejection of their work after having invested a substantial amount of time to the research process. Many times it is difficult to know what the researcher did during the qualitative data analysis process and how their findings and conclusions emerged from the data that were collected. This presentation is designed to help researchers and reviewers become more critically aware of what makes an analytical claim convincing in qualitative research. Issues related to the qualitative data analysis process, including the assumptions and nature of inductive analysis, the cognitive processes used by researchers to bring about findings, coding and data reduction strategies, and the interpretation and communication of findings through metaphors and analogies, will be highlighted. |
