15th Annual Raymond A. Weiss Lecture – Assessment of Physical Activity in Health and Surveillance Settings: What Have We Learned in the Past 50 Years? |
2006 Raymond A. Weiss Lecturer, Barbara E. Ainsworth, Ph.D., M.P.H., is a professor in the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University (SDSU). She serves as the Director for the SDSU Center for Optimal Health and Performance and the Co-Director for the San Diego Prevention Research Center. Her research relates to physical activity and public health and focuses on the assessment of physical activity in populations, the evaluation of physical activity questionnaires, and on identifying neighborhood environmental supports for physical activity.
In this 15th Annual Raymond A. Weiss Lecture, Dr. Ainsworth will address the ways that physical activity has been measured in health research and in public health surveillance settings over the past 50 years to understand the connection between movement and health and to identify the prevalence of physical activity behaviors in populations. She will describe how the landmark studies of occupational and leisure-time physical activity and cardiovascular disease in British civil servants in the 1950's started a cascade of research to identify dose-response relationships between physical activity and chronic disease prevention and to identify the prevalence of physical inactivity in adult and youth populations. She will discuss the use of physical activity questionnaires in classifying physical activity status, and the use of electronic methods in assessing activity in population groups. The lecture will provide highlights of methods used to assess physical activity in noted studies and in public health settings that have advanced understanding about the impact of physical activity on chronic disease prevention and disease treatment. |
