Research Consortium Scholar Lecture – Cognition, Motivation, and the Environment: How our Surroundings Interact with Individual Factors to Affect Physical Activity
2006 Research Consortium Scholar Lecturer, Melinda Solmon, is the Roy Paul Daniels Professor of Kinesiology at Louisiana State University, where she serves as the coordinator of the graduate concentration in pedagogy. Her research interests focus on factors that influence cognition and motivation in a broad range of physical activity settings, with the goal of learning how to structure environments that facilitate active engagement. During her lecture, Solmon will discuss how theories of achievement motivation have been used as a framework to study students’ cognition and behaviors in physical education classes. She will present findings from her work, describing how this line of research has evolved to provide a basis for understanding the decisions that individuals make about being physically active across a broad spectrum of physical activity settings. She will also present recent evidence that demonstrates the need to go beyond the examination of individual factors to investigate how those factors interact with environmental characteristics to enhance or constrain decisions to be physically active. Solmon received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin, and both her Master’s and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. She has served as the Chair and Program Chair for the AERA/Special Interest Group on Research on Learning and Instruction in Physical Education, Chair of the Pedagogy Review Panel for the AAHPERD Research Consortium, Secretary of the AAHPERD Research Consortium, and Section Editor for Pedagogy for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. She is currently co-editor for the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education. Her research on cognition and motivation in physical education settings has been published in a wide range of journals, and she has made numerous research presentations at national meetings.
